Northwest PV were the successful contractor in August 2019 to supply and fit an 11kW, 36no. photovoltaic panel array to the rooftop area of the County House, Lifford, Co. Donegal. This project was part grant funded through the SEAI’s Better Energy Communities scheme.
There were complications with this project due to access limitations, the age of the building fabric, confirmations regarding structural support and time restrictions to complete and commission. Northwest PV partnered with a registered structural engineer, certified electricians and CSCS trained operatives to ensure Donegal County Councils project concerns were addressed. The project was completed in time, within budget and to the specification requirements of both Donegal County Council and the SEAI.
Donegal County Council were very satisfied with Barry Sharkey and Northwest PV’s professionalism, enthusiasm and attention to detail from procurement stage right through to commissioning and handover of the project Safety File. The 11kW, 36no. PV array is currently on course to providing Donegal County Council with an estimated annual generation of 8,350 kilo Watt hours (kWh) of electricity per annum.

Before making the sizeable investment in Solar PV, we invited several companies to come talk to us and quote for their systems, some we liked, some tried to give us the very hard sell which we did not appreciate so much. I discovered Barry and his company NW Solar PV from contacting Solartricity, a major wholesaler in Dublin, and Barry is their recommended supplier in the northwest region.
Barry called to our house when in the area with another job and he immediately made a good impression - no fuss, very personable, professional, listened and made some great suggestions on the specifics of an installation, something no other company did on their visit (eg. use the inbuilt wardrobe in an upstairs bedroom to hide the cable routing from attic down to main fuse box). Barry's advice on the type of system to suit our needs and needs of a growing family was excellent. Our 4.7 kW/h (15 panels) system charges a 2.4 kW/h battery for evening use, and also sends energy to our water tank, heating water for kid's baths etc
Barry also suggested and provided details of another recent client of his locally to meet and view his system and work, and this client was highly appreciative of Barry and his team too, having done a large solar PV system along with air-to-water heat recovery installation in his home.
We were very happy to proceed with Barry, so he gave advice on navigating the SEAI grant system portal while waiting for a break in February 2020's stormy weather. He kept us constantly updated and when a break in the weather arrived, he and his team were on-site early to start. Internal electrical work was done on Day 1, along with scaffolding to the roof and installation of the panel brackets. Day 2 finished the job, with our panels installed, connected and commissioned and generating their first few watts before sunset that evening.
Barry guided us through the set up of the system, set up the monitoring app and left both written instructions in the attic with the system for its safe shutdown and start up and a full booklet of all we need to know. Our next step was the BER, in which the solar bumped our house up to a B2 from a D, incidently now qualifying for a reduced interest rate on our remaining mortgage, thereby further improving the payback period on our solar investment.
Barry promptly uploaded all required documents to the SEAI grant system portal, and the full SEAI grant was awarded at the end of March 2020, less than 2 months after installation.
We are extremely happy with our solar PV system, and could not recommend Barry and NW Solar PV enough as an installer. There have been some sunny days so far in March that we have topped 25 kW/h generation, and I can only look forward to what the long days of summer will bring. Working from home this weather means we are using the power immediately, reducing our load from the grid and we have plenty of hot water for kids baths. Do consider this investment and Barry as your installer, you will not regret it.

When I was looking for an installer of our Solar PV in spring of 2018 there was only about 4 company's in the Sligo region.
After contacting all 4 of them it was obvious to me which one had the most experience with Solar PV systems and this was Barry Sharkey with NorthwestPV.
In all the time from the begin in early 2018 he never lost the faith in my solar-project, even when I lost hope about how to make this work.
Together with Barry and all his knowledge we were able to realize a perfect working 3,6 kWh 12 panel system with 2 lithium ion batteries.
All works were carried out to the highest standards and everything worked from day one.
When the PV system was finished in March 2019 he uploaded all documents to the SEAI website and in May 2019 we received the full grant.
In all the time when there was a question or a change in our plans his response was always immediate in every way.
The PV system has generated in the first year more than 3000 kWh and saved more then 3 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
I can really recommend Barry and NorthwestPV to anyone who wants to produce his own energy and do something for our planet.
Last thing to say is Barry and me are working on a new plan to improve the output of the PV system for the winter period to make this very good system even better.
